What is the US Navy method?

This method estimates body fat from a few circumference measurements and height using a logarithmic equation. It is quick and convenient, but like any estimation has a margin of error, especially if tape placement is off. For a deeper dive, calibration tips, and limitations, see the full method page.

What is body fat percentage and how does the Navy calculator work?

Body fat percentage is the share of your body made of fat versus everything else (muscle, bone, organs, water). The US Navy body fat calculator estimates this using simple tape-measure inputs: waist, neck, and height for men; and waist, hips, neck, and height for women. It’s faster than lab methods (DEXA, BodPod) and is great for tracking trends over time.

The calculator supports metric and imperial units and works on desktop and mobile. Results are estimates only and not a medical diagnosis.

How to measure for the US Navy body fat formula (step‑by‑step)

1) Gather your tools

Use a soft, flexible tape measure. Stand relaxed and breathe normally.

2) Measure your neck

Place the tape just below the larynx (Adam’s apple). Keep the tape level and snug but not tight.

3) Measure your waist

Men: measure at the navel (abdomen), relaxed, after exhaling gently. Women: measure at the narrowest part of the waist.

4) Measure your hips (women only)

Measure at the widest part of the buttocks with the tape parallel to the floor.

5) Enter height

Use your current height without shoes. Switch units to cm/in if needed.

Tips for consistent results

  • Measure at the same time of day.
  • Avoid measuring immediately after big meals or workouts.
  • Record to the nearest 0.5 cm (or 0.25 in).
  • Use the same tape and technique each time.

Why use a body fat calculator instead of BMI?

BMI is based only on height and weight. It can misclassify muscular people as “overweight.” A body fat calculator (like this US Navy method) uses circumferences that better reflect body composition. For best insight, track your body fat % and your waist circumference over time.
